- Average in-state tuition: $27,577
- Average out-of-state tuition: $33,023

Five things the data shows
- Selectivity is concentrated at the top. The 10 most selective U.S. colleges all admit under 6% of applicants, but the average school admits 67.1%. The "admissions crisis" is a top-100 story, not a national one.
- The out-of-state premium is smaller than people think. The average out-of-state sticker is 20% above in-state ($33,023 vs $27,577).
- Aid covers about 63% of average tuition. Mean aid is $17,305 against average tuition of $27,577.
- Debt at graduation averages $23,950 — less than one year of average tuition.
- Test-optional has not become the default. Only 11% of schools have a permanent test-optional policy as of 2026.
